Highlight: The Bruce. Our Process on a Full Home Remodel
Olympus Cove; the garden of the gods or beautiful neighborhood sanctuary. Either or, it’s a place I want to be. This week we highlight a project we entitled The Bruce in the heart of Olympus Cove on Salt Lake City’s east bench. This full home remodel for a client saw the original mid-century Utah home turn a new corner under our design and craftsmanship.
This is a unique project in the sense that we rescued our clients from a contractor that wasn’t performing to industry standards (a gentle reminder that ‘cheaper’ will often cost more in the long run). “The challenge was picking up the pieces from another builder,” says Ashley, owner and co-founder of Michaelis Homes. When we got the call from our clients to take charge of the project, we could not have been more excited and prepared to do it right. We were able to take over by delivering prompt timelines and quality trades work. Sean Michaelis adds, “we were able to relieve them [the clients] from a bad experience with another builder.”
Our Bruce project was a blending of old and new with this open concept design. This remodel includes an incredible 45ft. glulam beam that we inset into the ceiling so there would be no headers disrupting the line of sight above your head. Originally the stairs leading to the basement were in the middle of the house, so we moved them to the corner of the home under an enlarged window to create a more cohesive floor plan and beautiful view. One of the most unique features of this home is its mid-century fireplace. We preserved the structure by updating its grout and finishing with an alabaster German smear. The marrying of the natural elements from the Bruce’s mid-century roots with modern Utah design has enhanced the home in really wonderful ways. Most importantly, our clients were extremely satisfied!
We’re happy to jump into our next Olympus Cove project soon…
