What Mid Century Modern Design can do for you

Mid Century Modern

A term that encompasses vintage and modern homes alike. This style is more ubiquitous than ever. The houses we build at Michaelis Homes that fall under the mid-century modern genre combine organic shapes, minimal lines, and a focus on functionality. We come across these mid-century modern homes often in Salt Lake City - as seen in many homes of our body of work.

This week we broke ground, or should we say, broke walls, on a three layer split level home from the late 1960s. And let us tell you, it is a gem. Located just outside of Big Cottonwood Canyon, this home will get a complete floor to ceiling, basement to roof remodel. Our design team has a couple of additions planned for this new construction and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Knowing what the Michaelises have planned makes for eager anticipation.

Want to break into the mid-century modern style without fully remodeling your home? We have four suggestions you can implement in your home today.

1. Organic and Geometric Shapes
• Simplicity is key here, seek clean lines in furniture. Pieces like chairs and coffee tables are often focal points in the mid-mod design style.

2. Function Over Form

• Find pieces that last. Like above, furniture is kept simple, but they are simple with good function, and therein lies the beauty of these pieces. Do away with excessive ornamentation.

3. Contrasting Materials
• Wood is a hallmark of the mid-mod design. Contrast it with an accent wall. Or how about a pop of color in a couch or favorite sitting chair in velvet? Don’t be afraid to mix and match organic and synthetic materials to make this design a reality.

4. Bring the Outside - In

• Natural light is a big design feature in mid-century modern homes. But if a newer, bigger window isn’t in your budget, round out your decorating with plant life. This brings us full circle to styling with organic shapes - let’s get actual organics inside!
